Chapter Nineteen

Sam returned to the clinic. Hunter had the reporter cornered, with his back, literally, against the wall.

“Do you understand, son,” Hunter was saying, “that to print any of this is to open up your newspaper to legal action?”

“Yessir,” the guy said, looking nervous, “but with all due respect, this is my first job, and I really want to keep it. I’m more worried about my editor’s reaction today than I am about the paper getting sued sometime next month. I was told to write this story and that’s what I’m going to do, with or without any information from your client. I won’t say any of this is true, mind you. I’ll use quotes from the mother, that’s all.”

“That’s all?” Hunter said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “That will brand my client a pedophile in a city newspaper. Do you really want to do that to an innocent woman?”

The reporter kept his mouth in a tight line. He was made of tougher mettle than Sam would have imagined.

Hunter shook his head and walked away from him, clearly realizing what Sam had figured out. The guy was going to write the story. Period. If it got squashed, it would have to come from higher up.

Sam went over to Hunter.

“Listen,” Sam told him, “I’ve played tennis with the news editor a few times. He’s the brother-in-law of one of the guys at the company. I’ll try giving him a call.”

“Chances of that working?” Hunter asked.

“No idea,” Sam said. “But it can’t hurt.”

“Go for it.” Hunter headed outside, pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket as he went out the door.
